The Defining Day ( 0) Printer friendly page Print This

September 11, 2001. What do you think about when you recall that day? Do you remember where you were when you first became aware of what was happening? Do you remember watching the plane hitting the second tower and the incredible fireball?

What changed for you?

What can I write that hasn’t already been written?

What can I say?

All I know is that twice a day, every day, I happen to glance at a clock and I see it, 911, as a constant reminder, almost as if God is telling me to not forget that day, to not allow the commission or our consciences to wrap it up in a neat package, complete with regrets and mea culpas, and never again.

Something tells me that September 11, 2001 is the defining moment of our generation, not in the way that George Bush wants us to believe, but in the sense that it is the greatest, and maybe the last, chance we have as a society, a civilization, to reclaim our once great Republic. Not to reclaim it through war and retribution, but through a leap of consciousness. Bear with me here.

Anyone who has done a shred of independent research into the months and years surrounding that day could not help but come to the conclusion that we are not being told the truth, or anything closely resembling the truth by the government. Something is very wrong here.

Long before that day, the very same group of individuals who now comprise much of Bush’s cabinet wrote position papers advocating the same course of action we have undertaken since 9/11. They lamented in those papers that short of a "Pearl Harbor" type event, the American populace would not be behind such an overtly radical departure in U.S. foreign policy. Lo and behold, they got their Pearl Harbor.

It is common knowledge that early in 2001, petroleum giant Unocal and our government were negotiating with the Taliban for right-of-way on a pipeline through Afghanistan. Those negotiations broke down, and the U.S. threatened that military action could begin as early as the fall of 2001. This was reported in the foreign press. It has also come to light that upon taking office, the Bush administration declined reams of intelligence on Al Queda gathered by the Clinton administration. We have yet to see the accounting of the Cheney energy policy meetings, despite subpoenas. What are they hiding?

Why was the head of Pakistani intelligence, who wired $100,000 to the hijackers, meeting with members of congress that week?

The questions are endless. The point is that all of these questions remain unanswered. Unless we get answers, we’ll never know what really happened. I believe this is truth’s last chance. If we as a society allow this event to pass into the history books as a lie, we’re doomed. How much disinformation can a society take before it ceases to be a functional civilization? Truth never dies, but it can get buried to the point of suffocation. When it suffocates, strange things happen in the quest to keep it buried. We are already witnessing our government’s obsession with secrecy, their desire to keep everything hidden under the guise of "national security."

This is our last chance to force our leaders to come clean, to cleanse our national psyche. If we fail, this nation crumbles under the weight of its own lies. September 11 has been used to justify 2 wars, erosion of civil liberties unheard of by conservative leaders, and the largest bureaucracy in our history. It is the major plank in Bush’s reelection campaign, and is being politicized by both parties for their political ends. Meanwhile, we show through our actions that justice was never our true aim in the war on terrorism. The Kean Commission refuses to bring up these issues. Meanwhile, the 9/11 widows, including Ellen Mariani, pray for justice and for disclosure, which doesn’t come. Millions of Americans hang on every word of the commission, hoping and praying that someone in power has the balls to let the cat out of the bag, or to at least ask why there were earth tremors in lower Manhattan over 2.0 on the Richter Scale 10-12 seconds before each of the towers fell, or why WTC #7 fell at all. The most obvious anomalies are the ones that are ignored. How can this be? Where is the press????? Only us idiots on the web are asking these questions and demanding answers. Are we all wrong? Are we all Democratic plants plotting Bush’s Waterloo?? Are we all Bush- hating socialists? Are we all missing the most obvious answers that everyone else in this country seems to have accepted? Do we see ghosts where none exist? Are we losing our minds?? At times I feel like I am losing mine. How could the bloody glove not convict? Has logic, and the pursuit of objective truth been permanently subverted to the desire for comfort and wealth? Have we lost our souls?

Do we see everything through "political" glasses to such an extent that we miss the real context, which is that somebody here is just plain lying to us? Has our moral relativism blinded us to the fact that regardless of the comple

ities and the spin, there exists a true chain of events that precipitated 9/11, which included our own government and the government of Israel? Are we so media conditioned that we can’t see that the Iraq war was predicated on a string of lies? Can’t we grasp that our petroleum-marinated administration fully comprehends the implications of "Peak Oil," and would do anything to forestall the inevitable crash it will cause? Are we totally blind to the fact that our trusted leaders opposed any investigation into the largest crime in US history? That fact alone is enough to convict in a jury trial! Are we so afraid to learn that our leaders don’t give a damn about us that we’re willing to accept the most implausible explanations of that day? Are we willing to sacrifice our souls to keep things as they are, to further the illusion of governmental benevolence? Are we willing to accept less freedom in the name of security? Is our press so afraid to pursue the truth? Have we totally forgotten the principles on which this nation was founded? What are we so afraid of? Are we afraid of losing our lives and our livelihoods if we dare to speak as Clarke and O’Neil did? Has it gotten so suffocating that true liberty and the open exchange of opinions and ideas has been crushed?

I stand by watching this lie being perpetuated, and I wonder these things. We need to know what happened, the Dow be damned. We need to know if the people running our nation were willing accomplices to mass murder. We need to know if we have any power left. We need to know if anybody really gives a damn. We need to know if anyone here is still alive, and willing to fight for truth. We owe it to the 9/11 widows. We owe it to Afghanistan and Iraq. We owe it to the idea of freedom. We owe it to ourselves.
