Grassroots Democracy

I'm a Cambridge tenant and a member of the Green-Rainbow Party, committed to grassroots democracy and social justice.

People have a right to participate in the decisions that affect their lives and communities. I commit to:

Hold open monthly community discussions

Put resident proposals on the city council agenda

Use my science background to explain technical issues in plain english

Work for the interest of all Cambridge residents, regardless of party affiliation or citizenship status.

Rent Control

A vibrant functioning city should be able to house those who work in it and bring people of different racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds together.

I worked on the rent control petition campaign. I will keep fighting for rent control, and for zoning that puts the interests of ordinary people ahead of the interests of corporations and universities.

Civil Liberties and Immigrant Rights

Homeland Security and the PATRIOT Act have multiplied the powers of police surveillance and other activities hostile to an open, democratic society. Muslim and Arab immigrants have thus far borne the major burden of this assualt on our rights.

These national policies have implications for local law enforcement. The City Council recognized this with a resolution against PATRIOT Act enforcement.

Who is monitoring whether our police are in fact refusing to enforce the PATRIOT Act?

A different way of doing politics

We are all tired of politicians being heavy on talk and light on action. This campaign is about a different way of doing politics. The Green-Rainbow Party has actively worked to get the rent control initiative onto the ballot and will continue to work to strengthen the diverse social fabric that makes Cambridge a living city — a community of communities.

As a city councilor, I will use my visibility in the community to continue to stand by immigrants being targeted by Homeland Security. I have been involved in the defense committee of Amer Jubran, who is guilty of nothing more than "speaking while Palestinian." I have participated in solidarity work with people facing the INS "Special Registration" program under which thousands of Arab and Muslim immigrant men were systematically fingerprinted and interrogated, and many hundreds of these men who willingly cooperated were arrested or detained.
